Born in Japan, Dr. Mario Gotoh is a Grammy Award-winner who has distinguished herself in multiple roles as an innovative, creative violinist, violist, educator and composer with remarkably versatile style in all genres of music. An avid interdisciplinary collaborator, she is a featured actor-musician in William Kentridge’s “The Head and The Load,” performing at Holland Festival, Tate Modern in London, Ruhr Festival Germany, and the Park Ave Armory NYC. As an educator, Dr. Gotoh has extensive experience teaching college and precollege students, has taught creativity classes at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, and, through Silkroad Connect, works to lift up the voices of those who have been intentionally silenced. She is a member of the global social-impact collective Silkroad Ensemble (founded by Yo-Yo Ma) with whom she has toured New Zealand, Australia, Taiwan, South Korea, China, Canada and US. Mario is also a member of The Knights chamber music ensemble. Mario has performed at renowned venues and festivals, including: Hamburg Elbphilharmonie, Vienna Musikverein, Dresden Musikfestspiele, Tanglewood, Ravinia, Vail Dance Festival ReMix NYC, Festival D’Aix-en-Provence, Caramoor, Apeldoorn, and Banff Centre. Mario regularly records and performs with many pop music artists including: Stevie Wonder, Brian Wilson, Roger Waters, Sting, Angelique Kidjo, Dionne Warwick, Adele, Goldfrapp, Sufjan Stevens, Perfume Genius, Doja Cat. She has performed live numerous times on The Grammys, SNL, David Letterman, Stephen Colbert, NHK Japan, and other global TV and radio broadcasts. Mario was asked to be and performed as the original violinist-violist on Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway show, soundtrack and movie: “Hamilton: An American Musical.” She holds dual-degree Doctorates and Master of both Violin and Viola Performance from Stony Brook University, and a B.M. and Performance Certificate from Eastman School of Music. Mario is inspired by her community activism, French and Japanese languages, cuisine, cooking, writing, visual arts, film, literature, swimming, and exploring cultures worldwide.
